Jethro Mitchell SWAIN. Born on 25 Apr 1843 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. Jethro Mitchell died in La Jolla, San Diego, Calif. on 19 Aug 1917; he was 74. Buried on 20 Aug 1917 in (cremated) Greenwood Cem., San Diego, Calif. Occupation: Mining Engineer, Hotel Operator, Farmer.


On 12 Apr 1866 when Jethro Mitchell was 22, he first married Mary Elizabeth TROUGHTON, daughter of James TROUGHTON & Frances Ann BAGGETT, in Wyandotte Or Mooretown, Butte, Calif. Born on 13 May 1850 in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. Mary Elizabeth died in Red Bluff, Tehama, California on 15 Jun 1928; she was 78.


They had the following children:

1. Alonzo (1867-1955)

2. Henry Clinton (1868-1931)

3. William Evert. Born in 1871 in Bangor, Butte Co., California. William Evert died in Red Bluff, Tehama, California in 1947; he was 76. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif.

William Evert married Nettie DEHAVEN.

4. Francis (Frankie) Elvira (1873-1961)

5. Hattie Lora (May) (1876-1916)

6. Cassius Perkins. Born on 2 Feb 1881 in Tehama County, California. Cassius Perkins died in 1952; he was 70. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif.

Cassius Perkins married Alice GREGORY.

7. Mary Elizabeth. Born in 1883 in Tehama County, California. Mary Elizabeth died in Red Bluff, Tehama, Calif. on 30 Oct 1972; she was 89.

On 19 Jul 1907 when Mary Elizabeth was 24, she married Harold J. WIGGETT, in Seattle, King, Washington.


Jethro Mitchell second married Alice C. HAYNER. Born on 4 Jan 1854 in Michigan.

In 1916, Jethro and Alice drove their Model T Ford from La Jolla, California to northern California then east to Michigan. In 2009, the La Jolla Historical Society held an exhibit which chronicled their drive across the country. Here are photos from that exhibit featuring paintings that were commissioned to recreate the look and feel of their journey.
