Louis II, Frankish Emperor
Louis II, b. c.822, d. Aug. 12, 875, was the eldest son of the emperor LOTHAIR I. Designated to rule Italy in 839, Louis was crowned king by the pope in 844, and in 850 he was made coemperor with his father. He became sole emperor in 855 after his father's abdication, although his rule was confined to Italy. Louis spent most of his career trying to expel the Saracens (Arabs) from southern Italy, an endeavor in which he was hindered by the Lombard princes. Despite victories over the Arabs at Bari (871) and Capua (872), he failed to win control of the south. On the death (863) of his brother Charles, Louis gained much of the Provence. When his other brother, LOTHAIR II, died in 869, however, Louis received no part of the kingdom of Lotharingia, which was partitioned by his uncles LOUIS THE GERMAN and Charles the Bald (later Emperor CHARLES II).
